第2回 自然保護セミナー
日本自然保護協会 安部真理子博士
「沖縄のサンゴ礁の自然について 辺野古の埋め立てを例に」
今回は、日本自然保護協会の安部真理子さんをお迎えし、サンゴ礁生態系の保全活動についてお話をいただきました。
冒頭に、サンゴという生き物やサンゴ礁生態系の特徴について解説をいただき、それらが白化現象、海洋酸性化、赤土の流入、オニヒトデによる捕食、病気、盗掘、埋め立てなど、多くの危機に直面していることを紹介いただきました。さらに、ニュースなどでもとりあげられることの多い辺野古大浦湾の埋め立て工事の状況についてのお話がありました。大浦湾は、ジュゴンという絶滅危惧種の生息地であることや、生物多様性の宝庫であることが知られています。その環境が工事によって激変し、さらに土砂の持ち込みなどによって深刻な外来生物問題が起こる可能性があることなどを学びました。
全体を通じ、美しい海の写真がふんだんにちりばめられているのが印象的でした。質疑応答では、多くの質問・コメントが出されました。安部先生、どうもありがとうございました。次回は堀江正彦先生による英語セッション「海洋プラスチック問題とG20の成果」です。こちらもぜひお楽しみに！

2nd Nature Conservation Seminar on 12 Jul, 2019

“Coral reefs in Okinawa – Such as Henoko Reclamation”
Dr. Mariko Abe gave a lecture on conservation of coral reef ecosystems in Okinawa, especially around Hanoko area (Oura bay). The area is well known because the new military base is now under construction, and Okinawa prefectural government urged central government to stop it. Dr. Abe first lectured biological and ecological characteristics of coral and coral-reef ecosystems and explained that they are facing various threats, including breaching, ocean acidification, soil erosion, predation by star fish (Onihitode), disease, stealing, and reclamation. Then, she talked about how valuable the biodiversity of Oura bay is. In her presentation, there were many beautiful photographs of the ocean. We thank Dr. Abe for her impressive talk. Next Nature Conservation Seminar will be held in fall. We invite professor Masahiko Horie and discuss Marine Plastic Litter in English.

The World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO - WHITRAP
In this side event, the organizers will share initiatives on formalizing and reinforcing open emergent networks of heritage practitioners, from site managers to researchers, including decision and policy-makers as well as institutions. Different networking platforms being currently under way at global and regional levels will be presented by Advisory Bodies, UNESCO Chair, Category 2 Centre and other partners, which objectives are to facilitate knowledge-sharing on World Heritage beyond expertise and disciplines, and to connect practitioners dedicated to the conservation of natural and cultural heritage alike.
